Richard III: the search for his brother
May 30, 2013 by joycefiler | Edit
Recently, I was asked to examine and report upon the human remains contained within the tomb of George, Duke of Clarence situated in the magnificent Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire (fig. 1).
The Duke, ‘immortalised’ by Shakespeare as having been drowned in a butt of malmsey wine, was an elder brother of Richard III and was, for a time, heir to their eldest brother King Edward IV. The tomb (fig.2), situated behind the high altar, is recorded as the final resting place of George, Duke of Clarence and his wife Isabel.
Grateful thanks are given to the Abbey authorities for allowing this project to go ahead. The results of this research project are due to be published soon – watch this space!
